Frequently Asked Questions...

How can I listen to ham radio users with my shortwave radio?

Just picked up a shortwave radio today. Grundig Yacht Boy 400 PE.

Anyhow, it doesn't have air bands but it does have shortband which is overwhelming to a new user. Where do I go tonight to listen to ham operators with my radio? What band, exact frequency if possible.

THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!

PS- Also, should I use the built-in antenna or the long 20 foot wire antenna?
UPDATE: I am not having any luck. :( I tried everything last night and even tuned in to the frequencies suggested here and heard almost nothing. Mostly garbled morse code. Occasionally I could hear some VERY VERY distant chatter but I could understand what they were saying.

Settings:
23 ft wire antenna is spread out on my balcony (apartment)
Speakers: mono
SSB: On
Built in antenna is also fully up.

just not having any luck.

Answer:

You can listen in on HF ham radio in the following frequency ranges:

10m: 28 to 29.7MHz
12m: 24.890 to 24.990Mhz
15m: 21.0 to 21.450MHz
17m: 18.068 to 18.168MHz
20m: 14 to 14.350MHz
40m: 7 to 7.30MHz
80/75m: 3.5 to 4.0MHz

The 10m, 20m, and 40m bands are the most active and do use SSB.
