Frequently Asked Questions...
What is a HF Transceiver w/ Spectrum Analyzer and DSP capabilities?
I am in a play (about Hurricane Camille in Virginia) where I play an amature HAM radio operator in 1969. I'm not very tech savvy and I have a line of technobabble that I'd at least like to understand. Can anyone give me a quick layman's rundown of what this is? HF Transceiver w/ Spectrum Analyzer and DSP capabilities. I know what a Transciever is, but what does the HF stand for? Any idea as to the rest of it? Please remember that this would have been in the context of 1969. Thank you.
Answer:
There wouldn't have been any DSP capabilities in 1969, as DSPs had not been invented, yet.
HF stands for "high frequency". High frequency radio frequencies are between 3 and 30 MegaHertz. The AM radio dial ends at 1700 which is 1.7 MegaHertz, which is about half of 3 MegaHertz , so AM radio is lower than the HF band. Also, consider TV channel 2 is at 54 MHz, so the HF band sits in between AM radio and the lowest TV channel. CB radio (remember that?) operates from 26 MHz to 29 MHz, so it is at the upper end of the HF band.
A spectrum analyzer is a device that displays a graph, like an x-y graph in algebra. In this case the x-axis is frequency from zero Hz to, say, 30 MHz, and the y-axis the intensity. So, the spectrum analyzer displays how much signal there is at every frequency from 0 to 30 MHz. If you turned your 22 MHz HF transmitter on, a line would show up at x=22 MHz and y=the amount of power being transmitted. The graph would probably show all the AM stations as vertical lines, also, at their respective frequencies.
